Fun Fluency Activities With Stuff You Have at Home!

Posted May 23, 2016

Jana Barrett, MS, CCC-SLP, has agreed to share a fun and inexpensive activity that she made with you. Jana is an excellent and very creative therapist, and we are SO glad she's on our team. Thanks for the idea, Jana! You're awesome! Here it is:

Fun Fluency Activities With Stuff You Have at Home!

Hello speech and language world!

This is a quick and easy activity that I put together with items I had available in my office: silly putty and a game for fluency called “Fitz It.”

The activity is "stretching" initial sounds for students who stutter with silent blocks or repetitions.

First, they draw an attribute card from the Fitz It game, and then they have to stretch out the first sound of their answer using the silly putty as a cue.

For students just starting this strategy, it is easier to start with sonorants (nasals, liquids, glides) which have continuous airflow, so you may want to pick out certain cards that you know will generate answers with those sounds.

My student uses this strategy whenever he gets stuck on a sound and it helps him to begin voicing.

Of course, you can use this strategy with any variety of available materials: sentences from a student’s textbook, conversation questions, cards from Apples to Apples, etc.

The best activities I come up with are improvised from materials I already have!

It is fun and exciting to create activities that meet each student’s needs and are fun.

Also, using attribute cards targets my student’s language goal of describing by providing attributes and categorizing!

Good luck, and let us know how you adapted this activity to meet your students’ and clients’ needs.

Feel free to click here and contact us for a picture of the materials!

We would love to hear from you! Please comment below!
