Hello and Happy Saturday!
What an inspiring day! Members of the Ridge Zeller Therapy staff and their families participated in the DSNetwork’s annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk, part of the Arizona State University Homecoming Parade.
I can’t even guess how many walkers there were. Must have been in the hundreds!
I have to share the most amazing experience I’ve had in a long time.
A young man with Down Syndrome was selling 2014 DSN calendars, as well as necklaces which said, “KEEP CALM-It’s only and extra chromosome”. (They were so cute; I bought two!)
He was using functional life-skills, such as, greeting people, initiating and maintaining a conversation, collecting money, and making change. These are skills he will use his entire life.
Seeing this boy so successful made me feel good about the things we do with our students as practitioners of speech pathology, OTs, PTs, school psychologists, teachers, and parents.
My career as a SLP has been very rewarding, and seeing this young man doing so well in the community reminded me of why I chose this profession in the first place.
I’ve posted pictures from the walk on our RZT Facebook page. For more information about DSNetwork of AZ, check out the DSNetwork website.
Have a great weekend!
